School security that supports safeguarding

Schools and colleges carry a particular mix of safeguarding duties, site security and compliance obligations. The concerns that matter most need a design built around them, not one adapted from a retail or office system. Who’s on site at drop-off and pick-up? What happens at the boundary when supervision is thinnest? How would you evidence a safeguarding incident?

What we see most

  • Unauthorised access and perimeter intrusion, particularly at arrival and departure times
  • Safeguarding incidents at gates, boundaries and pick-up areas
  • Vandalism and damage out of hours and during holidays
  • Theft of bikes, devices and equipment from cycle stores and shared areas
  • Visitor management at reception, linked to door entry and access control

Protecting the site without monitoring pupils

Coverage focuses on entrances, boundaries and shared spaces, not classrooms and play areas by default. That balance is a deliberate design decision, documented so you can explain it to governors, staff and parents.

Looking ahead

Larger sites and those hosting public events should be aware of the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, known as Martyn’s Law. Its requirements will apply once the implementation period ends. I can help you consider what it may mean for your site.
